If you have a student that you suspect is living in an abusive home you are required by law to report that information for the safety of your student. Who should you report it to? It would make sense to let your principle know as they are in charge of the school and all the students. However, if they are the only one you report it to you have not fulfilled your duty. Communication with your principle is great, but in this situation it is essential for the safety of the student to call child protective services and report your concern. Your principle should know, but by just reporting to them they become the middle man and it is easier for a concern to be lost in the shuffle. Once you have called child protective services your duty is completed and all you can do for your student is be a support. You do not need to tell the child you have done this and it is probably best you don't.
